What Does Cathy do?
First of all, please let me tell you something about how I operate. I would describe myself as an Integrative Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Supervisor, using a combination of the Person Centred approach with Transactional Analysis and Psychodynamic theoretical models.
Basically, this means that I believe it is the Clients themselves who hold the answers to their own questions. What I bring to the relationship is warmth, compassion and genuine respect for the client, and a safe space for them to tell their story. I offer a willingness to share the therapeutic journey with each Client, and to help them to reach the goals they set out for us to achieve. The counselling and psychotherapy theories I use can help the Client to gain some idea of the history of their present day difficulties, and offer a way forward for the Client in terms of re-structuring or re-aligning their perception or view on life. They can help them to return to their original drive towards wholeness and health.
I offer supervision to other counsellors and psychotherapists. I have been providing supervision since 2002. Please see the 'Supervision' page on my website for more information.
In addition, I am a Trainer. I am endorsed to teach Transactional Analysis by the European Association for Transactional Analysis. For more information about the training courses please go to the 'Courses' pages.
If you have any questions about of the services offered, please feel free to phone, or email. (You can use the link on this page).
Supervision is available for qualified and trainee counsellors and psychotherapists. For further information, please read the 'Supervision' page on our website.
How to Make an Appointment?
The best way to contact me is by phone on 01208 74600. My hours of work are 0930am until 5pm. I am also available on weekday evenings for telephone calls. As I do not interrupt sessions to answer the phone, you may get the answering machine. This is confidential, and you can leave your name and number, and any message, and I will call you back. Alternatively, you can email me, I check my email daily and will respond to you as soon as I can.
What Happens Next?
Initially, I offer all potential new clients an initial assessment session. This enables us to meet and discuss any worries or concerns you may have, and to decide whether we feel that we want to work together. I also assess to see whether I would be the appropriate counsellor or therapist for you. If for any reason we decide not to work together, then I can help you with details of colleagues whom you may choose to contact. The assessment session usually lasts for about an hour.
If we decide to work together we can then decide what it is that you want to get from the counselling or psychotherapy process. We can also discuss regular review sessions so that we can keep a focus on whether you are getting what you need.
I see clients weekly, during the day. I prefer to see clients at the same time on the same day each week, but I also appreciate that this is not always possible so I am willing to negotiate times and days on an individual basis.

People come to counselling for many reasons. Some are struggling with feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety or hopelessness. Others find themselves in difficult circumstances or in unsatisfying relationships. Some want to explore the meaning of their lives.
What I can offer you is a safe, regular space where we can look together at what is concerning you. This might involve talking through what has happened during your week, the things you are thinking or feeling, events from the past or hopes and fears for the future. I will be committed to trying to understand what it is like to be you.
Counselling isn't a magic cure. At times it can be hard going, and I may not be able to give you the answer to all your questions.
As we experience your world together, you may come to see things differently. This insight will help you to make more informed decisions about the way you choose to go forward.
I work at The Therapy Centre, a Therapeutic Centre in Central Reading. I charge £40 for each 50 minute session, and work weekly.
If you'd like to get in touch you can reach my answer phone on 07900 605055 and we can arrange a time to meet. Alternatively you can e-mail me at fiona@create-space.org.
The first counselling session will be set aside for us to discuss your reasons for coming and for us to decide whether or not we are able to work together
I am a BACP accredited counsellor with a BSc. Honours in Psychology and an Advanced Diploma in Person Centred Counselling.
I am committed to ongoing Professional Development.
I work from a Person-Centred/Existential perspective.
I regularly meet with an independent experienced counsellor trained in supervision.
This is a usual part of counselling and gives me a chance to reflect on our work in a confidential place.
I follow the BACP Code of Ethics.
For more information about the way I work see my website at www.create-space.org.

Session Frequency & Duration
I offer an initial consultation and assessment. Following this, a therapy contract will typically be agreed. Sessions are usually weekly. An open-ended arrangement will usually be offered. Occasionally a fixed number of counseling sessions can be arranged. This may be suitable for brief work, where people feel that the short-term series of sessions is all they need to concentrate on a particular difficulty.
Psychotherapy is usually longer term and involves exploring underlying issues and unresolved conflicts. Periodic reviews are offered to mark progress and future focus of therapy. Ending therapy is discussed and planned in advance.
Aims of Therapy
One key aim of therapy is to assist people in managing any transitions in their life. Therapy is also about freeing ourselves, moving away from what we don't want, towards what we do want. The therapy can include exploring how you re-create situations; looking at what's in your control, what's reactive, what's choice. Holding that each of us are more than the impact of our history, we'll look at what works in your life, what doesn't and why some problems may continue. This may include exploring your feelings, beliefs and fears as well as your hopes, dreams, aspirations and values.
There may be something worthwhile you want that's not working; how you see yourself getting there may also be important. Besides resolving or accepting conflicts, therapy is successful when we are freer to choose, resourcing our own clarity of thought, strengths and inner wisdom.
Focus of work
The process of therapy can involve overlapping areas:
- Clarifying the present situation
- Exploring and releasing the past
- Living life to our full potential
Issues and Transitions in Our Lives
People come to therapy with various issues. These may include:
- Feeling stuck
- Something amiss - feeling of emptiness or loneliness
- Stress
- Frustration
- Dilemmas/Confusion
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Crises
- Relationships or marital problems
- Self esteem and self worth issues
- A search for a deeper sense of identity
- A sense of pointlessness or aimlessness
- A sense of alienation
- Lack of meaning, focus, motivation or purpose
- Ongoing sense of feeling out of control
- Destructive patterns, including eating disorders, addictions, phobias, obsessions, self harming
- Trauma
- Abuse
- Health related problems
- Bereavement
- Employment difficulties
- The impact of culture, discrimination, oppression, exploitation, bullying.
- Men's problems
- Personal growth
- Developmental issues
- Sexual identity
- Sexuality
- Reactions to spiritual awakening
- Spirituality
- Religious issues
The Therapeutic Relationship
Entering therapy provides the opportunity to talk and think together collaboratively about your situation and what level of help might be needed. It is a co-operative relationship in which mutual respect, shared responsibility and trust are essential.
My Approach
I value each person's individuality and unique circumstances. My experience and training includes working with a range of approaches and strategies. Most people found that our way of working together and the quality of the therapeutic relationship is the most important factor.
My focus is less about techniques or analysis and more about exploration, helping to shed light upon the obstacles in your life, so insights can be gained to change the areas you want to change or manage your life differently.
My role is to get to know you and for you to develop a greater understanding of yourself and others in a safe, confidential and supportive environment. Working at your own pace, I offer guidance and support so fresh ways of seeing yourself, the options and making choices become available.
My affirming approach is to be alongside you, and the issues you bring to therapy, so the choices you make, enrich rather than limit life. I hold the view that each person takes responsibility for the way they use therapy in their life - so the outcome is in the individual's hands.
I aim to bring clarity and sensitivity to my work with warmth and humour, together with my beliefs of self-determination and responsibility.
Accreditation
I hold registration with the main UK counselling and psychotherapy professional and regulatory bodies, namely UKCP and BACP. I adhere to their codes of practice and ethics.
Location
My central London practice is based in Camden Town. It has a range of easily accessible and frequent tube, bus and rail services with available parking nearby.
Fees
I charge a set fee and I have a limited number of reduced rates for those on a low income. It is usual for the full fee to be charged for missed sessions.
My background
My interest in therapy developed in 1982. A qualified Counsellor and Psychotherapist, in my practice I bring together over twenty-five years experience of working with people at points of change in their lives, both in the voluntary sector and privately. Over this period I have valued listening to people's life stories. I acknowledge and aspire to share what I have learnt from others.
I have completed 7 years training in psychosynthesis counselling and psychotherapy, drawn to it because it was described as a psychology of the soul.
Referrals
I accept referrals from doctors and other professionals, as well as from clients themselves. Potential clients will need to have an interest in thinking about themselves and desire to change. They will be offered an assessment as soon as possible.

I work with people experiencing stress, anxiety, conflict, depression, relationship difficulties, issues of self-esteem, self-control or self-assertion and such problems as phobia, obsessions, compulsive behaviours and addiction. I am not here to label, diagnose or pass judgment, but to support the person to make changes towards a more satisfying life. Using models drawn from a range of schools of thought, I promote an equal and honest relationship with my clients. My focus tends to be on present-day experience including the experience of the body, which is in many ways inseparable from the mind and emotions.
I work with both couples and individuals and usually suggest that clients come for a 1 hour session each week. My practice is easily accessed near both Bayswater and Notting Hill Gate. I attend ongoing supervision and post-qualification professional training and am bound by a Code of Ethics approved by the U.K. Council for Psychotherapy.

I offer Integrative Psychotherapy for individuals couples and groups in embracing change in North London.
Change is an inevitable part of life and cannot be controlled. The tendency to hold onto the familiar is to resist change and remain stuck at a threshold. This is a source of much pain, dis-ease and distress that people experience in life. Suffering is the product of holding onto anything, which no longer serves us.
We all have a unique experience of life that makes us who we are. This brings a diversity of experiences to each of us, some stressful, some sad, some devastating, some of great joy. What each experience is guaranteed to bring is a new lesson, if we are receptive to the teaching.
Psychotherapy enables us to understand our personal histories and highlights negative patterns that lead to emotional stress. In addition psychotherapy helps us accept necessary change and personal transformation so that we can live our life in a more constructive and fulfilling way.
My Practice is In North London. When you feel ready for information or an appointment, I invite you to contact me Aisha Ali
