- Camden London Greater London United Kingdom
Women & Health is a voluntary sector agency providing low-cost access to complementary therapies, counselling, self-help groups and health classes for local women who either live, work or study in the London Borough of Camden. The centre is currently funded by Camden Council, Camden & Islington Health Authority, various grant-making bodies and through service provision.
The project was set up in response to a survey carried out in the Camden Town area by Bloomsbury Community Health Council in 1983. The survey found that local women were not able to access appropriate health services and what they wanted was community-owned health services with affordable complementary therapies provided by women in a women-focused framework.
We have grown substantially in thirteen years. We started with just one counsellor, one massage therapist and a yoga class. Now we are a thriving centre with thirty two counsellors, thirty complementary therapists and fifteen women running a variety of self-help and health-focused classes and groups. Our ethos is to provide services at low-cost so they are available to all women and our sessions include everything from Yoga and Massage to Acupuncture, Osteopathy and a health group for women with learning difficulties. During 98/99 we provided 3951 individual sessions of complementary therapies, 3300 hours of counselling, 650 workshops and health classes, 598 home treatments for housebound women and nearly 50 outreach sessions, as well as pregnancy tests, a well woman clinic, advice, information and a weekly GP advice session.
The Centre has developed a reputation within the local community for providing affordable health services in a safe space that are responsive to the needs of the local community. Services are provided free of charge or on a sliding scale of cost according to income. By providing a stable, consistent and high quality service we have built a firm level of trust amongst local women and organisations. The work of Women & Health is firmly embedded in the local community.
